Why Take Cecchetti Examinations?

How to Prepare
Consistent class attendance is essential. Most students preparing for Cecchetti examinations attend a minimum of two ballet classes per week, with class frequency increasing as dancers advance through the levels. Regular practice, thoughtful correction, and steady review of theory all contribute to exam readiness.
Study Resources
Preparing thoroughly helps dancers feel calm and confident. Students may find it helpful to use online study tools such as Quizlet to create flashcards and review theory from the graded syllabus books. What to Expect in the Examination
Examinations are conducted by one or two certified examiners from the Cecchetti Council of America Board of Examiners. Examiners understand that candidates may feel nervous and strive to create a calm, supportive environment.
Most exams begin with a brief introduction in the center of the studio. Theory questions are asked first, followed by the demonstration of barre work, center practice, adages, and enchaînements appropriate to the level.
Theory Questions
All required theory and terminology are found in the CCA graded syllabus books. Special attention should be given to the new theory introduced at each level. Because the method is progressive, candidates may also be asked questions from previous grades. Reviewing earlier material helps build confidence and reduces exam-day nerves.
Exam Day Planning
In most cases, the only thing you are required to bring is you.
- Inhalers may be brought if needed for comfort and safety.
- Grade IV candidates must provide the music for the choreographed dance at the start of the exam.
- Beginning at the Elementary level, pointe shoes should be brought into the examination room.
Exam Length
Examination length varies by level and number of candidates.
Student-level exams typically range from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Professional-level exams generally range from 1.5 to 3 hours.
Results and Certificates
The CCA understands the excitement of receiving results. Examination results and certificates are mailed to the sponsoring teacher within one week of the exam.
