December 24, 1927-January 5, 2002

The CCA is deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved CCA Executive Board member and Permanent Examiner Rose Marie Floyd.

Rose Marie was the Founder, Director and Choreographer of the Contemporary Civic Ballet Company. She founded her non-profit company in 1956 to provide dancers the experience of performing and to further the cultural development of the community. Many of her students have gone on to perform in major companies including the Joffrey Ballet, Netherlands Dance Company, Houston Ballet, Martha Graham, Cleveland Ballet and multiple Modern Dance Companies and Broadway Musicals.

Rose Marie holds the Final Maestro Enrico Cecchetti Diploma, the highest honor in the Cecchetti Society, a branch of the Imperial Society of Teachers of dancing in England and the Cecchetti Council of America (CCA). She is past President of the CCA, and a permanent Examiner.

A graduate of Wayne State University, Rose Marie has received many accolades including the “Woman of the Year” award from Soroptimists International and the “Teacher of the Year” award from the Michigan Dance Association. She has been awarded the “Arts Achievement Award” from Wayne State University and was selected for “Who’s Who Among Teachers in America” in 1996. Dance Teacher of the Year Award from Dance Teacher Magazine in the Private Studio and Conservatory category was bestowed upon Rose Marie Floyd in 2006.

After surviving a mild stroke in 2007, Rose Marie continued to produce and edit many Cecchetti educational videos. She also published her first book in 2015 called “My Ballet Study Book” Building a Strong Foundation. Rose Marie has impacted countless dancers and teachers lives through her understanding and ability to teach the style and quality of the Cecchetti method of ballet. Above all she has done to become a legend in the world of dance, Rose Marie was a great women of faith and worshipped weekly at St Dennis Catholic Church. She not only taught ballet, but also the importance of trusting and depending on God in everything! She found purpose and joy in every day…truly an example for us all.

In Memory of our beloved Rose Marie Floyd, the CCA is creating a new scholarship. The Rose Marie Floyd International Cecchetti Ballet Scholarship will be awarded to a recipient for an international Cecchetti summer program to study the Advanced and Diploma work. Rose Marie was passionate about continuing education for teachers. She shared her knowledge enthusiastically, teaching in the States and abroad. For several years she taught at the Cecchetti Society Summer School in England. She was a founding member of CICB and had strong connections with many of the international Cecchetti organizations. This scholarship is an appropriate representation of continuing her passion for the artistry of ballet as taught through the Cecchetti Method.
