International Summer Schools

Type: Student
Date: July 11 - 24, 2010
Curriculum: Classical Ballet, Pointe, Variation, Pas de Deux, Character, Jazz, Improvisation, Mime, Performance Workshop, with Lecture Topics including: Dance History, Nutrition, and Injury Prevention & Care.

Dancers of all levels will participate daily in two ballet technique classes, one dance related class, and one performance related rehearsal. As part of the program dancers in the B levels will receive pointe. Levels C & D will receive pointe, partnering, and variations.

All Classical Ballet Classes will be accompanied by accomplished piano musicians.

Student Acceptance Requirements

Summer School Cost:
Tuition, Room & Board $1,200.00 (TBA: 2009 price)
Transportation is provided from the Grand Rapids Airport for a one-way fee of $20.00. The additional fee must be included in final payment.
Housing: Students requesting on campus housing must be 11 years old by December 2010.

Adult supervised housing will be provided for dancers at Kollen Hall on the campus of Hope College. A full nutritional meal plan with three meals per day is provided. Kollen Hall is whithin walking distance of all classes, and provides double rooms, linen service, and laundry facilities. Students under 18 will be chaperoned by adult counselors throughout the Course.
Student Conduct:
Recreation: The Dow Health and Physical Education Center on campus offers an indoor swimming pool, track, and a fully equipped conditioning room. Chaperoned activities will be scheduled both on and off campus.
Scholarships: Three scholarships will be awarded for the 2011 Summer Course to dancers in levels C & D. A $10.00 audition fee is payable the day of registration.

There will be a special Awards Banquet Friday. July 23, 2010.
Male Scholarships: Scholarships for males are available for 2010 Summer School, call for further information.
Performance:

The Summer School culminates with public performances on Saturday July 24, 2010, at the Knickerbocker Theatre, Holland, Michigan.
Transportation: Holland, Michigan is served by commercial bus lines, Amtrak, and the Grand Rapids airport. A shuttle bus from the airport will be available on the days of registration and at the conclusion of the Summer School. Arrangements must be made in advance.
Hope College:

Hope College is recognized as one of the outstanding liberal arts colleges in the nation with a thriving and expanding dance department. The attractive, first-rate campus is located two blocks from picturesque downtown Holland.
Guest Faculty: 2010 Faculty:

Lynn Brennan Tabor:

Ms. Tabor began her classical ballet training with Sylvia Hamer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Canada to study on scholarship at the School of Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and subsequently danced with the company. From Winnipeg, Lynn moved to Montreal to dance with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and from there, to Cleveland to dance with the Cleveland Ballet. She performed soloist roles in ballets by many well known choreographers including George Balanchine, Leonid Massine, Dennis Nahat and Agnes de Mille. Lynn has been guest teacher and choreographer for the Cecchetti Council of America's international summer conference since 1995. In August 1997 she taught a choreographic workshop for the Edinburgh International Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Lynn has been on the faculty of Ballet Arts Center in Long Beach, California, New Jersey Ballet School, School of Cleveland San Jose Ballet, and Cleveland State University dance program. She was director of the Dance Department at the Cleveland Music School Settlement for five years until June 2003 when she relocated to Portland Oregon. She and her husband Christopher founded the Portland Youth Ballet in September, 2007 where they co-direct both the school and youth company.



Dawnell Dryja:

Dawnell Dryja, a Michigan native, received her classical ballet training from Dawn Greene; she is currently dancing with the Grand Rapids Ballet. She has also danced with the Tulsa Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Dayton Ballet and Metropolitan Ballet Theatre of Detroit. Her roles include: Titania from Midsummer Night's Dream, Swanilda from Coppelia, Fingerprints and numerous Balanchine ballets such as Allegro Brilliante, Four Temperaments and Jewels. Ms. Dryja’s roles with the Grand Rapids Ballet include: Snow Queen, Sugar Plum Fairy, Della in the Gift of the Magi, Tinker Bell in Peter Pan. She is also on the teaching faculty of the Grand Rapids Ballet School and has been guest faculty for the CCA, Toledo Ballet, and numerous workshops and schools. She holds her Cecchetti Advanced Certificate and is a Professional member of the Cecchetti Council of America.



Addison O'Day

Addison began his training at the age of 16 at the O’Day School of Dance in Detroit under his mother and father’s tutelage for one year. He studied at the Saratoga Springs and the Rock Summer School programs. He also trained for a year at the School of American Ballet and spent his junior year of high School at the Interlochen Arts Academy before leaving for the San Francisco Ballet School. Addison danced with the Alabama Ballet, under the direction of Wes Chapman from 1998 – 2001. After dancing professionally, Addison began his academic pursuit at the Indiana University continuing to participate in their Dance Program. An injury while guest performing brought him home to Detroit for surgery and recovery. Currently he is attending Wayne State University working toward a degree in chiropractic medicine.



Calin Radulescu

Calin Radulescu, originally from Bucharest, Romania, graduated with high honors from the Romanian National Ballet School. After graduation he spent four years in the Romanian National Ballet, where he danced as a principal dancer and toured with the company, performing in Switzerland, Germany, South Korea, Italy, Greece, France, Turkey, Bulgaria and Luxembourg. Next he traveled to Germany and danced for the Pfaltz Theater Kaiserslautern. In the United States he was invited to join Cincinnati Ballet where he spent two seasons. After dancing professionally for ten years, Calin began teaching and has been on faculty at the Grand Rapids Ballet School, Aquinas College, Toledo Ballet, Burklyn Ballet Theater, Cecchetti Council of America, Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company, Metro Shores Ballet Company, Dance Masters of Michigan, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp among others. Returning for his sixth year as an Associate Professor of Dance and Ballet Master at Grand Valley State University, Calin enjoys teaching and choreographing successful ballets such as: “Carmen”, “Tango Ballet”, The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night”, “Later On” and others.



Christopher Tabor:

Mr. Tabor began his training in the San Francisco Bay area. He studied at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City and L'Ecole des Grands Ballets Canadiens. His professional career began in Montreal, dancing with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens where he rose to the rank of Soloist. While in Montreal, Chris was offered a position with the Basel Ballet of Basel, Switzerland, where he performed many soloist and principal roles. After dancing in Switzerland, he joined Cleveland Ballet and danced many principal roles, ranging in scope from Prince Siegfried in SWAN LAKE to the Champion Roper in Agnes DeMille's RODEO. While still dancing with the company, Chris was promoted to the position of Ballet Master, and soon thereafter, Regisseur. Chris has taught and staged many works for companies such as the Atlanta Ballet and Ballet Nuevo Mundo de Caracas of Venezuela. Since 1995 he has been guest teacher and choreographer for Cecchetti Council of America's international summer conference. During the 2001-2002 school year, Chris accepted the position of Visiting Artist at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he taught choreography, as well as all levels of ballet technique. In the 2002-2003 season he was guest principal teacher with Oregon Ballet Theater. With his wife Lynn, Chris is founder and co-artistic director of Portland Youth Ballet in Portland, Oregon.



Diane van Schoor, FISTD

Diane joined the CAPAB Ballet Company and had a successful career performing a wide international repertoire culminating with principal roles. On retirement from the company she founded her own school of classical ballet and also held a lectureship in Movement Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. She travels internationally working with vocational schools and companies including: Cleveland and San Jose Ballet USA., Royal Winnipeg Ballet, The Royal Ballet, National Ballet School of Canada, Schools of Cleveland, San Jose and Winnipeg Ballet, and the Paris Opera Ballet School. From 1995-2000 she was artistic director of The Cecchetti Society of Southern Africa and in 1997 established a co-venture school for Cleveland San Jose Ballet in California. She is an honorary committee member of the Wayne State University for Fine and Performing Arts, a panel member for the Margaret Saul Scholarship Canada and is recipient of the Enrico Cecchetti Mabel Ryan Medal and the South African Dedication Award for services to ballet in South Africa.



Kimmary Williams:

Kimmary Williams received her early training in Washington D.C. with Helen Moore and Pamela Moore. She continued her studies under scholarship at the Joffrey Ballet School and with notable teachers Patricia Wilde, Richard Thomas and Finis Jhung. She has toured extensively throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Bermuda with Twyla Tharp, Connecticut Ballet and American Contemporary Ballet. Ms. Williams also appeared as a dancer in the feature film “Hair”, choreographed by Twyla Tharp. As a teacher she has attained the Maestro Enrico Cecchetti Diploma and has taught frequently at the Cecchetti International Summer School. Her teaching credits include Connecticut Ballet as a faculty member and company ballet mistress, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Princeton Ballet, Miami City Ballet as Faculty Principal and Nutcracker children’s ballet mistress, Pittsburgh Youth Ballet and School Principal at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. The Edinburg International Festival brought Ms. Williams and her husband, Jacob Rice, to Scotland for two summers to create a youth dance choreography workshop. In 2002 Ms Williams and her husband were appointed co-artistic directors of Southold Dance Theater, a professional school and youth company in South Bend, Indiana. During their three seasons with SDT they choreographed a new “Nutcracker”, “Graduation Ball” and a “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. This summer Ms. Williams was a guest teacher for Ballet Spartanburg’s Summer Intensive. She is currently on the faculty of Ballet Austin. In 2005 she and her husband founded Central Maryland Youth Ballet in Columbia, Maryland.



Viktor Yeliohin

Viktor Yeliohin, Ballet Master, Choreographer, and Teacher, is from Tashkent in the former Soviet Union. Victor's ballet studies included training in character, folklore, drama, music, mime, and dance history; he studied a year in Samarkand with the Ballet Master from the Kirov Ballet and trained in the Vaganova syllabus in Leningrad and at Gittis Conservatory. He joined the Donetsk Ballet in 1976 as soloist. In 1995 he received the distinguished title of Professor of Choreography from the Academic Board of the Ukraine Academy of Dance in Kiev. Viktor annually stages the children's parts of The Nutcracker for the Donetsk Ballet when they tour the eastern USA in December.
